Sure.  Doctrine at the time (any ex-zeros out there?  I _know_ this sort
of thing was covered at the boat school) was that crew was expendable,
replacements could be trained quickly (as was shown when the balloon went
up and large amounts of merchies were inducted into reserve billets)[1].

The problem with losing Battleship Row was this: the high command still
thought that battleships were viable, and thus were somewhat upset.  If
those ships had survived, they would have been nailed later on.

[1] Open to debate, of course.  I'm not privy to any detailed pre-WWII
    battle plans, I'm inferring this.
