JPEG is fine.  I'm going to try the layer merge approach that Scott
suggested and see if that takes care of it.   I just find it odd that Gimp
does this, when other products don't seem to have any problem with
reducing color depth while retaining smoothness.  I'll post a report of my
layer-merging adventures :-)
