My only experience on a German keyboard was at Cebit in Hannover this
year.  It took me about 20 telnet/ssh hops through firewalls and proxies
before I could finally check my mail in Japan.  The key lag was several
hundred milliseconds.  It was comical watching me "tzpe".  I gave up
trying to reply to anything after a while and just read my mail.  :-)
