The program 'xconsole' will monitor messages that are usually sent to
/dev/console.  If you do add something like:
xconsole -daemon -notify -verbose -exitOnFail
to your x startup script you will have a window into your console messages.
While minimized, it adds an asterisk to the icon name when there is "new"
data there to be read.

(Many versions of xterm also support the -C switch which does something
similar.)
