Or something similar? The program 'xconsole' will monitor messages that are usually sent to /dev/console. If you do add something like: xconsole -daemon -notify -verbose -exitOnFail to your x startup script you will have a window into your console messages. While minimized, it adds an asterisk to the icon name when there is "new" data there to be read.
