Now that Japan has eased off some of its more ridiculous restrictions
on redialing (which 3Com properly implemented) I really like the 3C56x
series of Ethernet/modem combos.  I use one to turn my one-slot
Stinkpad 330cs into a home external router and masquerader.  The
3c589_cs and serial_cs drivers worked first time, every time.

Current international (including Japan) version is 3C563D.

To avoid:  anything old enough that redials are subjected by the
firmware to the former regulatory imposed 3 minute wait....  (The 3Com
cards could be reconfigured to be say US or German compatible and this
is disabled, but I don't know what side effects besides disabling the
wait that might have.)
