Hi, I'm running FSF Emacs 20.2 with Canna and dl support compiled in. I'm using the binary from Debian Hamm JP. I am having a problem working with EUC files. I have my .emacs file as follows: (set-terminal-coding-system 'euc-jp) ;; buffer file encoding system (set-buffer-file-coding-system 'euc-jp) ;; This loads the canna library which is in the 'load-path' ;; if canna is not in the load path, you must set the path (load "canna") ;; The line below starts canna automatically. If you don't ;; want canna started automatically, comment it out. (canna) When I view a JIS file, the file is displayed properly. When I view a EUC file, the screen is bakemoji. I'm verifying the encoding with kcc -c For example, $ kcc -c /usr/doc/kon2/README /usr/doc/kon2/README: EUC However, when I try to open up the file, I can't read it. I can read the file fine with jed-ja. Reading and writing Japanese e-mail works fine with FSF Emacs. I can also create and save Japanese files. I think the problem might be with setting the buffer-file-coding-system properly. I've tried euc-jp-unix and others. Does anyone have any recommendations? There is a variable called default-buffer-file-coding-system that I've also been playing around with. I'm also curious as to why there are so many variables for the buffer-file-coding system. Some of the ones relevant to Japanese are listed below. This seems like something that is excessively confusing. emacs-mule emacs-mule-dos emacs-mule-mac emacs-mule-unix euc-japan euc-japan-1990 euc-japan-1990-dos euc-japan-1990-mac euc-japan-1990-unix euc-japan-dos euc-japan-mac euc-japan-unix euc-jp euc-jp-dos euc-jp-mac euc-jp-unix iso-2022-cjk iso-2022-cjk-dos iso-2022-cjk-mac iso-2022-cjk-unix iso-2022-jp iso-2022-jp-1978-irv iso-2022-jp-1978-irv-dos iso-2022-jp-1978-irv-mac iso-2022-jp-1978-irv-unix iso-2022-jp-dos iso-2022-jp-mac iso-2022-jp-unix japanese-iso-7bit-1978-irv japanese-iso-7bit-1978-irv-dos japanese-iso-7bit-1978-irv-mac japanese-iso-7bit-1978-irv-unix japanese-iso-8bit japanese-iso-8bit-dos japanese-iso-8bit-mac japanese-iso-8bit-unix japanese-shift-jis japanese-shift-jis-dos japanese-shift-jis-mac japanese-shift-jis-unix junet junet-dos junet-mac junet-unix old-jis old-jis-dos old-jis-mac old-jis-unix shift_jis shift_jis-dos shift_jis-mac shift_jis-unix sjis sjis-dos sjis-mac sjis-unix Any hints?
