I've been out of town for a while ... as a matter of principle I
branch off from a dead thread.

Unmoderated lists and newsgroups, issues like this are normally
discussed in-band on.  Taking it out-of-band implies either (a) that
the discussion should take place among "persons of power" and is
irrelevant to the run-of-the-mill members or (b) it's pure flame
anyway.  "Necessary" rules out (b) ....
