As far as I know you can create colormaps for all visuals and they should have some meaning. Look at the manpages for XCreateColormap. So I think it should be possible to have those effects. There is a very informative web site that has all kinds of information about X11 and Motif: http://www.rahul.net/kenton/index.shtml Hope that helps. I only did some stuff with colormaps for Pseudocolor visuals because in that case you need your own colormap to watch TV :).
