They are perfectly general and can be and are used for exactly the purpose you are describing. AFAIK you needn't limit yourself to 32bpp, as the XColor structure uses CARD16s for the R-G-B components. I strongly recommend that you get copies of O'Reilly's X series, vol. 1 and 2 on Xlib's features, and also the new book on the X device-independent color facility. (I'm not a specialist, I don't know any more about it that that. ;-) X11R6 now supports CIE and HIV color spaces directly, making that kind of thing much easier to do.
