The X server is single threaded, and X operations by one client can
block all other X server operations, including screen and mouse
updates.  When my machine had only a 486 w/o FPU (it is now a Pentium
Overdrive), loading fonts took many many seconds.  There are still
several Netscape actions (opening a new window, pulling down menus)
which block the X server when the machine is thrashing due to
background compiles, mail, ftp, etc.  But usually the whole machine is
quite busy, so I've never been too upset with anything other than
wanting a faster machine :-)
