This might be a really dumb question, but do you have XWindows
up and running? If you do then there are several POP mail clients
that run under X and are a snap to set up. XFMail is pretty good
for general mail reading, and Netscape is a good backup mail/news
client.

I don't think you're going to be able to escape M$ for long
unless you have X and all the apps that come with it.
