Crtl+Alt+F6, if you didn`t change that in your XF86Config. To fix the problem look at your .xsession file (if you have one) and at .xsession-errors. Although I think that depends on your Linux distribution, if you have those files or not. There is probably just a problem with the windows manager, i.e. the last program that is started for your xsession. If this program exits due to some error or doesn`t get started because it can not be found, the whole session finishes and xdm restarts with the login.
