tlug: XFree86 login problem

(this post is also in the tpc.unix group)

Hi all;

I'm having a problem with XFree86. I did a system reboot, and the
XFree86 login window comes up, but when I enter my username/password it
appears to accept it, but they a second later, the same window pops up
again, prompting me to log in. Even if I try to login at the terminal
screen prompt before the Xwindow comes up, eventually the Xwindow does
pop up and I cant login.

I just installed XFree86 earlier this week, and everything went fine, or

so I thought, as upon finishing the configuration, it came back with a
'congratulations - you have a running X server' message (or something to

that effect); it was the end of the day, so left it at that and went
home.

The past couple of days I have just been connecting to the unix box
through a terminal window on my W95 machine, and I've had no signs of
problems. But today I went back to the unix box, and realized I
couldn't long in on that box. Any ideas on what could be causing my
problem (besides my lack of unix experience :-)??
