Hello, I've recently started to use Midnight Commander, mc, in text mode with S-Lang, inside of a kterm with colorization and xterm mouse controls set to on. This is one of the few file managers that I like. It is fast, the primary consideration for me. I tried File Runner (fr), TkDesk, and dired, but I didn't really find that I used them. Surprisingly, I find that I am using Midnight Commander. I was wondering if there is a better file manager that works inside of Emacs than dired. The problem with using mc is that I do my mail, news, and editing inside of Emacs. So, I might as well manage my files within Emacs. I've been using the shell up till now and bash's file completion, and customizable prompt have been enough. However, I used mc and actually found it to be useful. So, I'm looking for this type of functionality within Emacs. My primary consideration is speed. I like the ability to open two or three columns side-by-side with each column containing a directory. If vertical columns are difficult within Emacs, I could adjust to horizontal screens. I like the colorization of directories, executable files, symbolic links, pipes, and core files.
