The only time I ever had problems with Samba is when I didn't put the
Linux box in the same workgroup as my windows boxes.

That's how it should be.  Just because 95/NT has garbage security, no
reason for Linux to.  use the guest account if you want people to trash
your data.. er.. access it w/o passwords.
