You can boot into single user mode from Lilo.

If you labeled the kernel "linux" (the thing you type at the lilo prompt),
type

  boot: linux single

This will drop you down into single user mode and you can edit the
run level in /etc/inittab
Maybe a line like this might be good.

  id:2:initdefault:

xdm is probably messing up because something is messed up in the
 $HOME/.xession or   /etc/X11/Xsession file.

For example, it is probably going through /etc/X11/window-managers
and trying to start a window manager that is not there. If you still
can't log in, you may want to try using twm, then work your way up to
the window manager of your choice.

Another trick to do if you can't get any window manager up is to
just do

  $ X

at the console prompt.

Then open up a virtual console with Ctrl-Alt-F2. login as the same
user. At the new prompt do

  $ xhost +yourhostnmae
  $ xterm -display yourhostname:0.0

Then you can open up multiple xterms in that screen to try to
isolate the problem.

Craig
