What could be very strange is if the two X terminals share a /tmp directory and try to use the same Unix-domain socket. You might also look in the xdm error log (usually /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/error-something, as I recall) and see if it's reporting anything strange. Take a look at the X-related stuff listed by `ls -al /tmp.' It looks to me like the X server inherits its stderr from the Xdm, which is redirected to a file somewhere. Oops, on Debian that's /var/log/xdm-errors. You might try looking at the results of ls -l /proc/<X.pid>/fd and see if that rings any bells.
