Tell me what the mistake is, please, before I ruin more people's
lives by tormenting them with the same error.

I used RMail with BBDB for a long time, but shifted to semi-gnus
about six months ago.  It took a _lot_ of work to get it
configured the way I wanted it, but it's very, very handy once
it's up an running.  If you move to Emacs for your mail, you
should definitely check out BBDB (provides an intelligently
automated rolodex facility that interfaces smoothly with your
mailer).
