Thanks to Felix and Joe for the further responses.  Since
I'm pretty sure I've been careful to use the correct device
files in my testing, perhaps the only option left open to
try is to change the IRQ settings of the serial ports, as
Joe suggested (next challenge, figure out how to do this :^)

No, I guess another option is to just keep using my 2-button
mouse, shut up and be happy :^)
