Hi all, The followings are the results of the first "Perl Journal Japan" project meeting held on Saturday 28 February. TLUG members are encouraged to comment and take actions. Minutes of Meeting - 1st "Perl Journal Japan" Meeting ===================================================== Date: Saturday 28 February, 1998 13:30-15:00 Venue: Omotesando, Mexican Restaurant "El Torrito" Present: Joe Marchak Aiichiro Hayashi (From IMASY) Urs Roesh Ayako Kato Yurie Horita Alberto Tomita Craig Oda Ken Harada Subject: Discussion on publishing "The Perl Journal" Japanese edition - Feasibility and strategies 1) Background Joe Marchak has been contacting Jon Orwant, Editor/Publisher of "The Perl Journal", a quarterly magazine about Perl, for possiblity of issuing its Japanese version. Jon has been responding to Joe positively, and given several copies of different issues of TPJ. It appears Jon will evaluate the trial issue when we can produce. In doing this, we will need to (and can) cooperate with other groups of free software community, such as JLUG, xxBSD, and/or Perl. [Post Meeting Notes] The Perl Journal Winter 1997 issue has statement of circulation signed by Jon Orwant. 12,000 copies printed. 7,191 paid circulation. 2) Goal Through doing the production of "The Perl Journal - Japan" (TPJ-JP), we can expect :- * Experience in cooperation of TLUG and other free PC (UNIX) communities. * Full page ad for TLUG and other participating groups * Share of the revenue (if any) to the participating groups * Promote free software * Help volunteers learn more about Perl 3) Contents We will begin with <translations> of "TPJ" articles in the initial stage. At a later stage, we will find writers of Japanese original articles, with subjects such as "Japanese language processing". 4) Translation Volunteer translators will be invited to join the project. We will announce this project on :- TLUG mailing list JLUG mailing list (Japan Linux Users Group) FreeBSD group (through IMASY contact) CGI mailing list (led by Aiichiro, with some 900 members) Universitiy (Yokohama National University) and other personal contacts. Announcement will be also placed on TLUG web site when the new TLUG server is up and running. The translation work will be volunteer, with no monetary rewards. The volunteers are expected to work on translation only for his interest, learning (of Perl and translation), honor and satisfaction. 5) Publication The TPJ-JP will concentrate on the translation, edition and production. We will contact publishers like O'Reilly Japan or Laser5 and ask if they are interested in the printing, circulation and those publication works. There would be negotiation regarding the split of the revenue. For the initial trial issue before contacting the publishers will be issued electronically on TLUG web site. By doing this way we can avoid any risk, and show how the project can generate the output. We will work on the latest issue of TPJ to be published on 3 March. 6) Work flow Most of the activities will be done on a new, dedicated mailing list named "TPJ-JP". Those interested in the project will be invited to join this ML. The English issue of TPJ will be shown on TLUG web site. A volunteer translator will select the article he post "I will do this" message to ML (or Web?). The translation will be posted on the ML, subject to proofreading by ML members (led by proofreading leader), and posted as the final article. 7) Timing We target to issue the 1st electronic issue on 15 May. (Do we need more time?) 8) Project Leader Joe Marchak has been elected as the temporary TPJ-JP Project Leader. 9) Actions * Report on plan to Jon Orwant Joe Marchak * TLUG Server setup at PHT Craig Oda/Joe Marchak * TPJ-JP Mailing List setup Craig Oda * TPJ-JP project web page Urs Roesh * Invitation by posting on MLs, contacting friends etc: TLUG (by this Meeting Minutes) JLUG Ayako Kato IMASY Ken Harada FreeBSD group Ken Harada (through IMASY member) CGI-ML Aiichiro Hayashi University (Yokohama National Univ) Alberto Tomita Friends and personal contacts All PS: Craig, could you put this onto TLUG web site (on twics till server is up) so that we can refer when we invite people.
