Good news! I've got Apache working now! I'd like to extend my thanks to the many people who gave me input on tracking this problem down. I found the answer in httpd.conf, where the ServerName was commented out. Un-commenting this and putting in the IP address of the machine (the host name isn't on DNS) and restarting Apache cleared up the problem.
