However, maybe we should move it to the new server over time to allow the use of web or ftp interfaces for the archive files. This could also facilitate in casual searches. The mailing list would be used for technical support, meeting announcements, and general Linux questions. We could set up a test BBS style discussion group for a special interest group. For example, your idea of virtual communities, might be good for special interest group. With our own server, we also have the option of creating multiple mailing lists. So, we could create tlug-tpj-jp@example.com to discuss the Perl Journal Japanese Edition project. Of course, every time we split the discussion, we are taking a risk. A discussion group needs a critical mass to keep it interesting. So, we should probably keep stats of the number of posts and number of people on both the mailing list and the digest. We could say that over x amount of people (for example 200) on one list, we consider a split of some type. This could also be calculated on posting volume. For example, over 20 notes per day, we look at the BBS format. I think that recording the stats of virtual community development would be really useful. Maybe we could eventually derive a formula like x / y * z + l = optimal number of discussion groups.
