I have a Red Hat 4.2 system. I installed sound support in the kernel and by copying files to /dev/dsp or /dev/audio, I can hear the files. That is cat message.au > /dev/audio will result in my hearing the file message.au, etc. Also, I can using the saytime program and I can hear it say the time. But so far, that is the only sound program I have got to work for me. I have a Slackware system also and it plays things like Real Audio and a program called Xanimation which I can play a .avi file and hear sound. Nether of which I can do on the Red Hat system. I looked at /dev/sndstat and get the following: kichijoji:~$ cat /dev/sndstat Sound Driver:3.5.4-960630 (Sat Dec 6 18:11:20 JST 1997 root, Linux kichijoji2.mech.tuat.ac.jp 2.0.30 #3 Thu Dec 4 15:37:28 JST 1997 i686 unknown) Kernel: Linux kichijoji.mech.tuat.ac.jp 2.0.30 #4 Sat Dec 6 18:11:27 JST 1997 i686 Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 1: OPL-2/OPL-3 FM Type 2: Sound Blaster Type 7: SB MPU-401 Card config: Sound Blaster at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1,5 SB MPU-401 at 0x330 irq 5 drq 0 OPL-2/OPL-3 FM at 0x388 drq 0 Audio devices: 0: Sound Blaster 16 (4.16) Synth devices: 0: Yamaha OPL-3 Midi devices: 0: Sound Blaster 16 Timers: 0: System clock Mixers: 0: Sound Blaster Also my audio devices are as follows: 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Jan 16 18:07 /dev/audio -> /dev/audio0 0 crw--w--w- 1 root root 14, 4 Jan 16 18:07 /dev/audio0 0 crw--w--w- 1 root root 14, 20 Jan 16 18:07 /dev/audio1 Both are exactly as my Slackware system is. Does any one have any other ideas of where the problem can be? Looking at the sound-howto if what I have works, then it seems as if everything sound work, so I am not sure where else to look for the problem. Any ideas?
