Perhaps it is the fonts on your X11 system that gs is using.  If your
student does the rlogin and his Xserver, then he is using the Kanji
fonts on his Xserver, not yours.   If you do a 

  $ xlsfonts |grep jis

on your machine and on his, is it different?  Here are some of mine:

On a different note, it is kind of sad that PJE is still using
the older ghostscript.  Is there a PJE package with a newer
gs?  I wonder why they keep using the older one.
