A useful thing to try is "/usr/sbin/sendmail -q -d" ... the -q tells
sendmail that you wish to process the outgoing queue, and the -d displays
copious amounts of debugging information to stdout (stderr?  I forget
which).

That should pinpoint exactly why sendmail can't talk to the other machine
...
