I think Linux is great for a multi-lingual platform, especially if
you spend 90 percent of your time in one language. In the office
we use Japanese HPUX 10.0, Win NT 4.0 Japanese and Eng, Win '95
Japanese and Eng, Kanji Talk and Mac OS. I use Solaris 2.5 Eng
and Linux. Linux is kind of a roll your own development system.
So, I've got it running better for my needs than any of the other
systems. Each has their particular problem. The thing with Linux
is that the development of the Japanese support is so open and
freely available, that you can just install those pieces that
you need. This is awesome. The reason that I'm still running
Eng Solaris instead of Japanese Solaris is that I can't find
Japanese Solaris in Akihabara and I don't want to call CTC for
just a 10,000 - 20,000 yen purchase. I wish I could just suck
down the proper libs from the Internet, but I can't. Tell
him to go Linux and also to join TLUG. ;-)

Also, with Linux you have the added advantage of being anywhere
in the world with Internet connection and have that confidence
of knowing that you can get Japanese happening in a couple of
hours if you could FTP. That's cool. The alternative with
Sun or HP is a call to Japan and order the new OS. That takes
a while. Take control of your life, use Linux.

On another note, is Solaris 2.6 publicly available? I heard that
there was better performance of the Java Virtual Machine due to
threading with the Solaris kernel.

This would be nice for me too. Also, I wouldn't mind getting the
input working as well. Thanks for the tip on the libs though. It
was puzzling me.

Craig
