Sound recording with xwave 5.0

  Hi,

I was just trying a nice little sound recorder that runs under X, called
xwave (version 6.0 was just announced but is not yet on sunsite, so I
tried 5.0 - seems very nice).

I have a problem, though, that I have had whenever I try to record
sound. The volume is exceptionally low, so that I have to crank the
speaker volume up to 100% to hear a faint garbled noise that is just
barely clear enough for me to realize that it is me at the mike.

What's the problem here? I know that the microphone I'm using is
OK with a cassette recorder. Is this most likely a hardware problem or
have I missed something in configuring the sound drivers? Is there a
fix for this? I should add that I'm working in this case with /dev/dsp ->
/dev/dsp0.
