Are your gif images getting corrupted?   How are you transferring the
files to the httpd server?  If your use ftp and transfer the
file back to your Linux machine, can you open it with Netscape
locally?  Just download the image and use the "File" "Open File"
on Netscape.  
I vaguely remember a similar problem with Photoshop versions
from about 3 years ago.
