html frustrations

  Hi,

I hope you all won't mind this (presumably) not Linux specific question.
I spent the better of January writing lots of html and enough cgi-bin stuff
to get a feel for it, so I'm not a real newbie or anything. Been
writing a little html again, just the last few days, and _truly nutty_
things are happening! Doesn't seem to make any difference whether I
point Netscape 3.0 or Mosaic 2.7b4 at it (or whether I go through
my local NCSA httpd 1.5 or look at the file directly).

  To wit:

1. Some .gif images (though correctly referenced), just refuse to display.
2. Some .gif images display, but break the java applet further back in
the document. Commenting out the <img src=*.gif> turns the applet
back on and vice versa.
3. A combination of 1. & 2. (just when you think nothing could get any
   worse).

This is really not fun! Just knowing that I'm not alone in facing these
kind of senseless problems would be a great help in restoring some of my
severely threatened sanity. Pointers to solutions would of course be
welcome too.
