Java does not support Japanese characters. It uses unicode, but:
a)you cannot select a font that has Japanese characters.
b)some functions clear the hi-8 bits of unicode characters.

These problems will be sorted out in JDK 1.1 apparently, which will be out
in September last thing I heard. If you need it before then, putting the
kanji in gifs are really your only option.
