It's heavily hacked, the hacks are not portable to later versions of
GS.  The explicit documentation is non-existent (that I could find)
and the comments in the source are occasionally wrong (according to
Peter Deutsch, the author of Ghostscript).

I had hoped to be able to announce how to install the modern
kanji-capable versions (3.51+) with the Wadalab fonts in this
message.  madamada desu....  It's not hard, just mendokusai.  Maybe
next week....

This is necessary, at least in the version I had, because otherwise
you don't have any Japanese fonts.  I don't know if 2.4.1 was capable
of borrowing X fonts as more recent GSes are.

GS 3.30+ also does PDF.  Ghostview should shortly do PDF; the patches
are there but not integrated into the 1.5 distribution (nor into my
installation).
