I've been using Rocky 8.x on an older machine, (won't take RH or any RH
clone of RH9, machine is too old), and it seems fine. I don't do that much
with it though.

This is my preference, and just an old guy individual preference, but I
installed a minimal install and then added openbox. Note that if you use a
minimal install, wireless will work during the install but not afterwards.
To spam my own page https://srobb.net/rhel9.html, as mentioned there, one
must install NetworkManager-wifi, either from the CD, or temporarily run a
wired connection, if using Rocky 9. Their forums are pretty good, there are
some very knowledgable and reasonably nice people there.
Also, if using Rocky 9, I believe the only IME available is ibus. If you
use fcitx or fcitx5, there's no Japanese version available when I last
checked, (which was some time ago).
