Welcome to my monkey house. My "Washington's Axe" white box (2008 case, 2013 motherboard, 2017 video card, 2015 AMD Athlon am2 CPU, two HDDs of indeterminate age) decided to finally give up. Only eleven years out of a motherboard? Sheesh. I blame Trump. On 10/25/24 19:52, steve wrote:
This is just a note on an install I did today. I don't know if anyone will be interested but...I just installed 24.04.1 LTS on a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15.6" Touchscreen and so far I'm really happy with the result. Last week was a different experience.
I have to take back some of what I said. I'm having problems with suspend not working and keyboard not working after machine suspends/unspends. Keyboard is fixed but I'm still trying to figure out why machine won't stay suspended. :(
Steve S.
I replaced it with an ASUS PN-52B non-Windows motherboard AMD Ryzen 5600H (mobile processor with Radeon graphics) NUC, with 4x4K output (but, I'm still using my 1080p screen, right now) and 64Gb of memory. I put the O/S -- Kubuntu 24.04 LTS -- on a 500Gb NAND and have my mail and work save to a 4Tb internal SSD. I actually installed Debian 12 KDE first but it just didn't feel good. I did not do a legacy install as I wanted to install WIN in a VirtualBox and needed the setup to pass through. Someone else asked -- I "think" Wayland installed itself automatically.
Suspend / unsuspend issues became immediately apparent. When I Googled for solutions, one of the responses I got was that this is a known issue on *buntu + KDE desktop since about v.12 on "some" systems. I found ... then lost, and will have to spend time digging around to find ... a set of instructions to diagnose and repair the issue. But, a supposed fix is out there on line. IIRC, the search term was something like "screen blanks then turns back on" which is the issue I am having. Everything appears to suspend properly, the screen goes blank for about ten seconds, then turns itself back on. Checking CPU activity doesn't show anything that should wake the screen. I have WIN 11 running in a VirtualBox and it suspends properly, leaving the Plasma toolbar visible and the remainder of the screen blank. For the time being, I have been manually turning the screen on and off between uses. If someone else has tripped and fallen over the same set of instructions, a link would be helpful.
Like an idiot, I accepted the recommendation of fcitx5 for my bilingual input. I am pretty sure I used ibus on my previous box and will pull the fcitx setup out by its roots and start over.
