I've used, attempted to use, and eventually gave up trying to use, Japanese input methods in Linux over the last 30 years or so. It has to be one of the messiest and most dysfunctional aspects of Linux. I'd get it working for a while, but it would only work in some apps, then something would update and things stopped working. A distro upgrade (I've or been on Ubuntu for quite a while) would blow everything away. These days for small amounts of Japanese text I just cut and paste from a dictionary app, and for anything more significant I use the Google keyboard on an Android phone or tablet, where a single icon turns it on and off, and it works seamlessly in all apps. It would be nice to have it working natively with Linux, but as I near the end of my 8th decade I'm getting a bit tired for the jumping through hoops.
