Yes, I did consider that. It's still certainly an option; I just wanted to see if I could make something simple work before I went down that path. But as others have pointed out, the "S" in SMTP doesn't seem to stand for "simple" anymore. Maybe it's more like Security-bolted-onto-a-protocol-not-meant-for-security Mail Transfer Protocol these days. ;)
