I gather you don't have an academic job in Japan. :-)

Indeed I don't.

I work in engineering and in old fashioned craftsmanship. In those areas,
hiring organisations are far too easily intimidated by too much skill or smarts.

They always claim that they want the best people, even asking for near impossible
combinations, but when such a candidate shows up despite the near impossibility,
they get scared and back off.

Many hiring managers are scared of candidates who appear to have significantly
more experience and a larger skillset than they have themselves.

In that situation, having an over-impressive CV is counterproductive.

Maybe universities are different but if so, then probably only in degree but not
fundamentally. If the guy who is hiring is afraid you will outsmart him and
eventually take his job, he won't hire you no matter what the culture is.

In fact, this may well have been a factor in your interview at MIT.
