Thanks for your detailed answer Curt. I've taken your idea to set terminal
titles and, together with a modified rofi that keeps track of focused windows to
sort in mru order, I think I have something that works for me now. In particular
that makes my common use case of switching back and forth between a desktop
where I work on something and my browser much more bearable.
