It seems now like there are some opensource implementations "in the air", without beeing accepted in upstream at this time. So maybe there will be a solution later. Maybe comparable with the long time it needed for dm-cache to appear for i.e. caching SSD, or for the time with several filesystems which resulted in overlayFS now which looks like the generic strategy. cheers, Chris
