Hello nigel,

i have the same wireless pen but it doesn't work with free debian driver 
in wheezy.
And the confirmation is on this official page 
https://wiki.debian.org/rt2800usb where you can see you need to download 
proprietary firmware.
Maybe raspbian has some proprietary firmware already installed ( i have 
never checked about that )

Look like the Edimax EW-7811Un is not available in the free repository 
but require the non-free firmware :(
