I am getting the following error when trying to update bash in a

I note that your prose uses the word "update",
but your command uses the word "install".
Please study the following commands.

     sudo apt-get update
     sudo apt-get upgrade

# ...
By the way, it's frowned upon in 'buntustan to do things at a root prompt.

Agreed ... but, I am playing hooky from an unfinished assignment that I will slink back to momentarily, and do not have time to look but ... IIRC ... in the 'buntus, there is a command you can use to clear all buffers and install records prior to doing your "update." It will give you a zero point, so you will know exactly where any dependency issues begin. However, when I have used this in the past, it has always eliminated all dependency issues and allowed a clean install or upgrade of the package I'm having trouble with. You can find instructions by searching using "Ubuntu" + the output phrase from your failed install.
