IIRC ... in the 'buntus, there is a command you can use to clear all buffers and install records prior to doing your "update." It will give you a zero point, so you will know exactly where any dependency issues begin. However, when I have used this in the past, it has always eliminated all dependency issues and allowed a clean install or upgrade of the package I'm having trouble with.
