Ah, good thinking... surprisingly the problem is still there.　(I've no
bookmark folders to try opening in safe mode, which was how I was
testing before, but the right mouse context menu (the other symptom) no
longer works after a Japanese search.)

And no log messages in the console [1].

BTW, I also just tested with DuckDuck instead of Google, and same
problem. So it won't be something specific to google HTML triggering it.

I cannot get the same thing to happen in Chrome (yet). (Or any other
software, for that matter.)
