Sorry for the confusion; by "academics" I meant "publishers of academic journals". I agree that for the output format, for readers, PDFs are most popular. Darren P.S. Papers and books as PDFs are quite readable on my Nexus 7, so I've stopped complaining; but if colour is not involved I'd still prefer mobi format on my Kindle, because of the e-ink screen.
