It may not be so bad. Recently, one of our developers got a new Dell desktop, an Optiplex ---darn, I've forgotten the model, but relatively new, with no O/S, so he asked me to install Ubuntu on it. I ran the 12.04 install and grub failed to install. The BIOS was set to legacy. Just out of curiosity (this wasn't an urgent thing and was something I was doing while doing other things), I changed BIOS to UEFI and ran the install again.
