Having a couple of 2TB drives for a few years and fought with many
disk related problems and assuming with "constant crashes" you mean
system lock-ups that are not resolved until you power reboot the computer,
my guess would be:
* The 1.5TB disk fails/crashes during operation with some weird error.
* The SATA controller or its driver fail at properly handling that
error and crash, blocking the whole system.
There are a few possible ways to fix it:
* look for an firmware update for the disk
* buy another disk from another vendor.[1]
* report the issue to the kernel developers, they might have a good idea.

[1] Assuming that the disk vendor of your disk starts with an S, i would
suggest you try those with a W or H.
