Thanks.  I know, have extensively taught myself, have fooled myself into 
believing I understand Debian and some of it's derivatives.  I don't 
feel up to learning a different version of Linux at present.

I'll give USB-based a try.  I want something small and light and which 
runs natively, which is why a VBox solution isn't going to work this time.
