Something that comes up with software updates sometimes.  Past
experience with Brand-W in that case with a new firmware (or labeled
that way in the update in any case) for the graphics card rendered the
computer with no graphics when the machine was rebooted.  This time
around there was something (for Kubuntu) labeled "firmware
update".....
