Romeo, Darren, Thank you for responding. I cleaned up the 192.168.0.1/24 entries in my firewall settings to say 192.168.0.0/24. Not that I am going to discount any possibility, but if the problem was with Samba, then wouldn't I never be able to connect? Since I can always connect with the firewall off, I am thinking it must be purely a firewall problem. Perhaps there's some more complicated relationship I don't know about? In any case, I tried the port listening thing, but got no response: dave@example.com:~$ lsof -i :445 dave@example.com:~$ lsof -i :138 dave@example.com:~$ lsof -i :139 dave@example.com:~$ I don't know if these messages indicate a problem: dave@example.com:/var/log/samba$ more log.smbd [2011/02/14 18:38:36.507368, 0] smbd/server.c:500(smbd_open_one_socket) smbd_open_once_socket: open_socket_in: Address already in use [2011/02/14 18:38:36.507433, 0] smbd/server.c:500(smbd_open_one_socket) smbd_open_once_socket: open_socket_in: Address already in use [2011/02/14 18:38:36.991811, 1] smbd/process.c:776(smbd_sig_hup_handler) Reloading services after SIGHUP [2011/02/14 18:38:36.996507, 0] smbd/server.c:281(remove_child_pid) Could not find child 1856 -- ignoring I have a log in my /var/log/samba directory that has the same name as my Windows machine's network name, and it has entries like this, which look kind of harmless (These probably happened when the firewall as off): dave-i3 (::ffff:192.168.0.6) connect to service share initially as user dave (uid=1000, gid=1000) (pid 26819) [2011/02/15 13:35:00.958604, 1] smbd/service.c:1070(make_connection_snum) dave-i3 (::ffff:192.168.0.6) connect to service dropbox initially as user dave (uid=1000, gid=1000) (pid 26819) [2011/02/15 13:39:15.611216, 1] smbd/service.c:1251(close_cnum) dave-i3 (::ffff:192.168.0.6) closed connection to service share [2011/02/15 13:39:15.699316, 1] smbd/service.c:1251(close_cnum) dave-i3 (::ffff:192.168.0.6) closed connection to service dropbox Got this weird entry in the nmbd log.
