This is >95% not related but worth mentioning but when my
printer/scanner output 100% nearly black or dark shades of grey from
the copy button (note the test page did color fine), I needed to
unplug the machine and let is sit for a minute before pluging it back
in directly to the wall socket and not a surge protector.  A simple
power off had no effect.

I wouldn't have thought of that as a possible solution.  Thanks HP support.

I'd suspect the printing cartridge though.
