As far as the network problem, so long as the Live CD had Internet access, it's almost certainly solvable without too much difficulty. However, the devil is in the details, of which there are not a lot in your post. I suggest you start by logging in and then running "sudo /etc/init.d/dhclient restart". That should provide some informative output, and possibly even get you connected.
