Do check the Fedora forums--there's a long thread in the howto section.
One fellow has had a lot of success--though not having that machine, I
haven't been following, so don't know about the issues you mention.

Yes, Acer makes the same mistake--gives out a crippled Linux, then
wonders why Windows versions sell more.  (Not to mention that for about
$30 USD more, the Windows version has much better specs. )

A lot of distributions now make EEE versions.  #!Crunchbang, an Ubuntu
using openbox, is one.  (Lightweight, not a lot of unneeded garbage in
it.)
